The architectural installation resulting from the competition made by the Romanian Order of Architects, Timiș County Branch and the Timișoara European Capital of Culture 2021 Association, open to the architects, urban planners, designers, artists and multidisciplinary teams from Romania, Hungary and Serbia will be inaugurated in the central hall of the Northern Train Station of Timișoara.
The theme of the contest is to explore the functional character of the railway station – a generic, anonymous transit space – and its potential to host ad-hoc meetings, social dialogues, community events and meetings, through all of this to become the public space in excellence. The proposal for different use of space is intended to present the versatility of it – functional and aesthetic – and the possibility of interaction of the users with the space as well as the social re-positioning of these versus the other individuals.
The winning solution, inspired by the surrealist works by artist René Magritte, gives a state of tension through materiality and scale differences, providing a quick response to changes in site – temperature change, human flow, air movement, natural light. At the same time, the installation offers a spatial response to the concept- “Shine your light / Light up your city”- around which Timisoara’s European Capital of Culture 2021 was built.
